On the day of his funeral, as a 7year old, the sombre mood at my great gran’s house didn’t make sense to me. Everyone was glued to their TV screens and I couldn’t understand what the big fuss was about. All my young mind could comprehend was that he was an important part of the struggle. It was only later in life that I understood the sacrifices and hardships he and other great men endured for us to be able to have the freedom to have opportunities that weren’t limited by our skin colour.

We take it all for granted today because we grew up in sheltered environments. It’s days like these that become reminders of how it all began and how much things have changed.

RIP Chris Hani.
